When we approached the design for The Node, we were drawn to the intensity of Yakushima-a place defined by constant dualities: mountain and sea, shadow and light, stillness and motion. Instead of trying to resolve these contrasts, we chose to work with them, allowing architecture to become a quiet framework where opposing forces can coexist and be experienced.

The building is lifted lightly from the ground so the forest can continue to breathe beneath it. Moss, water, and air are not excluded but invited to move through the structure. In Yakushima's heavy rain and shifting mist, we saw opportunity rather than resistance. Roof forms collect rain and guide it into a central circular court, where water becomes both sound and presence, falling onto existing boulders that anchor the composition.

We organized the architecture through two opposing atmospheres: a darker, more inward north facing the mountains, and a lighter south opening toward sea and horizon. Between them, corten steel acts as a quiet mediator-absorbing time, weather, and change.

At the center, the circular deck becomes the true node. It is where circulation slows, where paths intersect, and where landscape and architecture briefly become one continuous experience.
