Wanaprastha
A Journey Into Stillness
Wanaprastha Retreat began with a deep respect for what already existed. Set within a lush forest landscape, the project was not conceived as a new intervention imposed upon the site, but as a careful transformation of an existing eco-lodge. We were drawn to the character of the original timber structures-their weathered surfaces, natural imperfections, and quiet relationship with the surrounding environment. Rather than replacing them, we chose to preserve and elevate their inherent beauty, allowing the architecture to age gracefully and continue its story.
The concept is inspired by the Hindu philosophy of Wanaprastha, the stage of life that marks a transition away from worldly pursuits toward contemplation, wisdom, and spiritual growth. Derived from the Sanskrit words wana (forest) and prastha (journey), the idea became a guiding framework for both the spatial experience and architectural language of the retreat.
A network of perforated bridges gently connects the villas, creating a sequence of moments that encourage slower movement through the landscape. Open courtyards, meditation pavilions, wellness spaces, and secluded rooms are carefully woven into the forest, allowing nature to become part of everyday life. For us, Wanaprastha Retreat is not simply a destination, but an invitation to reconnect-with nature, with time, and ultimately with oneself.
